READ IT WATCH IT WRITE IT Peter, Age 15 New Town High School Hobart Tas Silver People Margarita Engle Silver People is a verse novel that tells the story of a real-life event in the construction of the Panama Canal. The book details the time the characters have building the canal, as they workfor just a few coins a day. A story told in verse is still not an overly common thing to find these days, and it is a style of writing that lots of readers won’t be used to. Some may be reluctant to read this book, but would be glad if they did. The author made a wise choice in writing this story in verse, as it beautifully captures the hard times people had to go through. While the events are real, most of the characters are fictional. Teenage boy Mateo is the main protagonist, and he is a compelling character. Silver People has only one major flaw in that the second half of the book felt rushed. The first half took place over one year, while the second half rushes through a period of eight years. Overall, Silver People is a powerful read that will be remembered for a long time.
